THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S interview for Gab vol.54 December 2011

BRAND-NEW BAND INTRODUCTION
The information release ban was lifted on December 1 and we press for a glimpse of the mysterious band THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S!

THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S will present themselves at Stylish Wave Generation ~Break The Wall Between The Ages!~ live held at Shibuya O-East on December 1, 2011. At present only the band’s name and the names of the members have been disclosed.
kazuya (G./ex.FANATIC◊CRISIS), SHUN. (G./ex.FANATIC◊CRISIS), ZERO (B./ex.D’espairsRay), TSUKASA (Dr./ex.D’espairsRay) and Ricky (Vo./DASEIN).
Their first interview is for Gab! We will look for a glimpse of the band shrouded in mystery!

FILE 01
★ “OK!” right away?! The secret story behind the band’s formation★
kazuya: After FANATIC◊CRISIS disbanded there were a lot of ups and downs, but THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S started with me giving a call to SHUN. and asking if he’d like to play in a band together. After that I started looking for other band members and I thought that it’d be good if they were established musicians with career history so I asked ZERO next. I have been friends with Ricky for many years. I really like his voice and I always thought that I’d like us to make music together one day, so this time I made a pass on him (laughs).
Ricky: I also thought that I’d like kazuya to play guitar for me one day.
Q: I was really surprised at such an unexpected combination of band members.
TSUKASA: Excuse me, are you talking about me now? (everyone bursts out laughing)
kazuya: TSUKASA… (laughs) at first our band was without a drummer. Once in a month we had a party we called a “band meeting” and one day ZERO came together with TSUKASA and before I noticed he joined our band (laughs).
TSUKASA: When I went drinking with the other band members for the first time, I said: “OK!” because it was a lot of fun.
Ricky: It’s amazing that you said: “OK” after only one party (laughs).
ZERO: I invited TSUKASA to just meet and talk with other guys, but he said: “I’ll do it!” right away. He made a life changing decision in an instant! (laughs)
TSUKASA: When I listened to kazuya talking about the band’s future I thought that I wanted to share a dream with him.

FILE 02
★ Explosion of the personalities and the first impressions ★
SHUN.: I met ZERO first and I thought that he was a cool kid, I liked him. After that I met Ricky-san… (T.N. I always skip honorifics such as “san”, “kun” etc., but I’ll keep it for once so that the conversation makes sense).
Ricky: You are still calling me Ricky-san! (laughs)
SHUN.: You know what, there is something I wanted to say for a while… I will say it now! Can I call you “Rikkun? (everyone bursts out laughing)
Ricky: Ah, this is embarrassing (laughs).
SHUN.: When I met “Rikkun” (laughs), honestly I thought that he had the same smell as I do.
Ricky: But I am so cool!
SHUN.: Sorry, but no, you aren’t (laughs). TSUKASA was…
TSUKASA: Was I cool?
SHUN.: No, sorry, you weren’t cool! (laughs) You were really interesting!
Ricky: Was it a “party boss”?
TSUKASA: A party boy!
Q: What kind of impressions other band members made on you, ZERO?
ZERO: Because kazuya is my senior I was a little scared of him at first, but after we talked on the phone and exchanged e-mails I got a good feeling about him. After that I met SHUN. and I thought that he was really scary! (laughs)
SHUN.: People always think that about me at first (bitter laughs).
Ricky: Because your eyes speak of violence! (everyone bursts out laughing)
ZERO: But now…
SHUN.: What about now? (everyone bursts out laughing)
ZERO: Now I get just a little nervous around you! (everyone bursts out laughing) Ricky exploded right from the start.
Ricky: No way!
ZERO: I thought: “Who the hell is this guy? He is so interesting!” (laughs)

FILE 03
★ The concept of the band: the most important thing is to have fun?! ★
SHUN.: We all agreed that it’d be great if we could have fun and make a racket playing lives and making music.
kazuya: Yeah, in the beginning. Gradually everyone around started praising us and now I think that we are in danger and must do everything seriously (laughs). All members of the band are skilled musicians and I intend to entrust a lot of things to them. When making music, everyone understands the theory and it is easy to discuss. Anyway at the moment probably what I want the most for us is to have fun. I want our band to be not business, but a rock band. It was a lot of fun when I toured around the country driving an old van with the equipment myself. I’d like it to be something like that.
Q: Is TSUKASA going to have a lot of duties as a party boy? (laughs)
kazuya: He is. Aside from writing music I act as a band’s manager too and ZERO is responsible for our art direction. Ricky is the only one who has more than one band going so his part is just to make music and SHUN. is responsible for touring. We do everything ourselves.
Ricky: We are self-sufficient (laughs).

FILE 04
★ The band members themselves do not know yet how they will sound! ★
Q: At present (beginning of November) you haven’t played together even once, right? (laughs)
SHUN.: We are not going to play together until our first live on December 1! We are not going to rehearse! (everyone bursts out laughing)
kazuya: Well, I’d like us to sound like a rock band. Right now I am enjoying the sessions when Ricky adds melody to my songs.
Q: I got to listen to your demo tape and I had an impression that it was quite different from the kind of melodies Ricky had written until now.
Ricky: I am glad to hear that. It is probably different because kazuya writes music. Our music does not end with the two of us and the world of the dark duo (the rhythm section) is a part of it too.
ZERO: Until now I have played dark and aggressive music, but it does not mean that I hate melodious and pop songs. I listen to them and I’d like to play them too. I think I am going to move forward while keeping a part of what I have been until now.
SHUN.: Personally right now I am struggling with seven string guitar. But once I tried it I realized that it is an interesting instrument. I want to have fun, while learning new things in a process of trial and error both on personal and band levels.
Q: Do you write lyrics, Ricky?
Ricky: No, I don’t, right? (everyone bursts out laughing) Well, I guess I am going to (laughs).
SHUN.: We are a band with no rules, everyone can write songs and lyrics. Right now we decided that Ricky will be the one writing lyrics (laughs).
Ricky: I’d like to try and write aggressive and dark lyrics. Also I might write a very cute and beautiful love song! (everyone bursts out laughing)

FILE 05
★ Within an inch of “Party boys”?! The reason behind the name of the band ★
kazuya: Everyone suggested names for the band and we decided by voting. In the end we chose the name Ricky suggested.
Ricky: If I count how many band names I suggested, it was about 30.
Everyone: Awesome! (bursts out laughing)
Ricky: I really got into it, didn’t I?
kazuya: TSUKASA didn’t join us yet back then so only the four of us voted.
Ricky: If TSUKASA was with us, we’d become “Party Boys”! (everyone bursts out laughing) Well, a nuance is that, when putting on micro headphones, people can immerse themselves into our world and we can enjoy our own music freely too. The sound of the name was important too. kazuya was the one who added the number “4” to our band’s name.
kazuya: Back then it was still only four of us (laughs). I wanted to have a proper number of strokes in the name and when I added “4” it started to look good. When TSUKASA joined the band I thought: “This is bad, there are no longer 4 of us!”, but I can be an apostrophe in “4N’S”.
Everyone: Oh!
kazuya: Because I am a mature guy (laughs).
Ricky: I can be the apostrophe! (laughs)
TSUKASA: Then shall we rotate the apostrophe between us? (everyone bursts out laughing)

The Mikro Head 4N'S Interview

Interview: Takaya Yamamoto
Translation: Ena Hytonen

-To begin with, how did these members assemble?
Kazuya: There were ups and down but I really wanted to have a band again so first I contacted SHUN.. That time we both agreed we wanted the members to have careers and experience. Of course the working efficiency is important as well but we wanted to have members we could communicate with on the same level. That’s where we started our search from.
-Had you met the other members before?
Kazuya: I and Ricky have known each other for over 10 years already. I’d always liked his voice and thought it would be nice to work together. ZERO I had met through HIZUMI (ex. D’espairsRay vo.) and that time I asked him to work together with us. Then through ZERO I persuaded also TSUKASA to join us and then when we all were having a meeting while drinking together the band had suddenly been assembled.
-What is the consept of “THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S”?
Kazuya: We wanted it to feel loose like a session band, but still a ‘band-like’ band.
-What do you mean by ‘band-like’?
Kazuya: Every member has their role so that the band just wouldn’t be the same without them. Something like that.
ZERO: Just to do something we enjoy. The intense style until now is something I can do anytime so now I want to do something different. I really enjoy being in this band now!
SHUN.: With Kazuya we’re almost inseparable but the other members were mainly new faces. Everybody did feel connected though so I believe we could have fun together.
-Where does the name “THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S” come from?
Ricky: Everybody brought their band name ideas and we first chose 3 from them and lastly “THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S” was chosen. This name was actually my idea. To me it feels like a name I’ve heard before. Headphones are something you can submerge with to your own world while listening to music and that’s something we’re aiming for with our band.
Kazuya First we were supposed to find a short name... but then we ended up with this long one! *laugh*
all: *loud laugh*
SHUN.: I thought that too. *laugh*
Ricky: But it doesn’t feel really Visual kei-like. Maybe a bit electro-ish. But I see it as a good thing not to be categorized in one genre. It leaves space for imagination and I think that might be an interesting advantage while competing in the Visual kei scene.
-What kind of music do you want to make?
Kazuya: We haven’t really decided anything permanent. I suggest this and that like “How about this? Or this?” and then we proceed depending on the other members opinions. I tell Ricky what I think would be cool and then he records the vocals and after that we see what others think about it.
TSUKASA: When these members were assembled I thought we could do a lot of different things. When making music I first start with the image I have in my mind. I think I’m good in making songs with four-on-the-floor beat so I might bring a song like that next time.
SHUN.: As for me I don’t think much while making songs. I have some in the making and just hope that these members will make them listenable.
all: *laugh*
SHUN.: That means I trust the other members as they also have careers like we were planning with Kazuya. I’d like to advance while doing things I like and experiment while suggesting different ideas to other members. When we were in a band called LASTLIP with Kazuya I used to make music while thinking about the band more than what I myself liked. That’s why I sometimes made music that didn’t feel like me but now we all can freely bring songs we think are cool and I believe our style will naturally begin to shape. Although there’s still some parts we need to match... *laugh* I think this is a band with potential also because everything is still so open.
Ricky: I enjoy inserting vocals to songs that Kazuya sends me and it’s also fun because most of them are songs I couldn’t make myself. Until now my style was more pop but with this band I get to show my dark side as well. It might be cool to show the “wicked Ricky” too. *laugh*
SHUN.: The Black Ricky... *laugh*
Ricky: The truth is I’d like to go with silent Ricky but it just so happens that I have to talk. *laugh* At lives I would like to just sing more than talk. While doing many things I get confused wich Ricky I should be...
all: *loud laugh*
Ricky: I get tired if I just keep acting. Shouldn’t I just be the way I am but then that can be difficult too. So I leave the talking to TSUKASA. *laugh*
TSUKASA: No thankyou...
all: *loud laugh*
Ricky: Well, we’re not having a band to talk on the stage. But for some reason people say the talking parts have become more important.
-What do you think the lives will be like?
Kazuya: I think something mischevious would be fun. All of us have experience of well made lives so we each have our strenght. I think it will be a blast when the live starts everybody moving in all directions. You could call that a bit scattered too...
Ricky: Can I dive at the first song?
all: *loud laugh*
Kazuya: I think people would laugh at you doing something absurd like that. As we get older the music gets kind of softer as well as our behaviour. But I want to go to the opposite direction and make this band one of the most intense ones I’ve had until now. I haven’t had two bass drums that many times until now. I want to keep the feeling of this band really rock and that’s why I think mischevious would be ideal.
-So you don’t have any rules?
Kazuya: Maybe some but as few as possible.
Ricky: Go around just before the songs hook.
all: *loud laugh*
Kazuya: I wont *laugh*
Ricky: But you said you want to wave the towel. *laugh*
Kazuya: I didn’t say I want us all to go around the stage. Anyway, I think it’s best to do what feels fun and remember the feeling of having a band first time. Ofcourse we can’t go back to those times when we used to go around in a worn-out transportation van but to have that feeling again.
-Do you have something planned for your next move?
SHUN.: We have a hosting event at Shibuya WOMB on 14 February the Valentines day and on 14 March the White Day. We are planning to make this event called “MONSTER’S ROAR” continuous with other bands and stir up the scene. On march we also go to Osaka and Nagoya with “Stylish wave”.
-What is the meaning behind “MONSTER’S ROAR”?
SHUN.: Literally it means “roaring monster”. Every band is in a way a ‘musical monster’...
Ricky: Everybody wear a kigurumi okay?
all: *loud laugh*
SHUN.: We leave that to Ricky. *laugh* Shouting and roaring and having fun is a part of the titles meaning.
Kazuya: Also TSUKASA is creating a mascot character to this event.
TSUKASA: I’ll try my best. *laugh*
-Seems like also going overseas could be expected.
Kazuya: If we’d have the chance ofcourse we’d like to go but well go to countryside or anywhere. Right now what I think is most important is our time together with the five members. Everybody is quite busy and can’t gather that easily and having a drinking party once a month isn’t really that necessary but we have it to keep our distances close. That is what is most important now. Both overseas and in Japan. Ofcourse there might be some things that don’t feel nice but we’re all adults and all have experience so things will get sorted out.
-The logo and other design is also made by the band right?
Ricky: ZERO designed it, I think it’s awesome.
ZERO: I haven’t studied design or anything so I studied all by myself so I don’t have much knowledge. I’m learning while doing.
Kazuya: He’s also doing the designs for our merchandise, home page and my pick. On top of that he does the art directing of our artist photos. As I said earlier every member has their part in the band. Ricky does the lyrics and other production, SHUN. takes mostly care of live business, TSUKASA is responsible of production and for example character design and I do management and production. It’s like our band is a small company. We want to do things as much as possible on our own.
-Lastly please send a message to the readers of Visulog.
Ricky: Even though we all have careers this is a completely new band so I believe it could work as a inspiration to those who think of making a new band. I wish you keep a close eye on us and cheer for us.
SHUN.: We all are having fun making our music so I hope people who listen to us also enjoy and come to see our lives.
TSUKASA: Moments when you’re overcome with emotion have always been important to me so I want to enjoy moments like that with the members and people who come to see our lives. I hope we can all together overcome with emotion at our lives.
Kazuya: I hope our feelings about the band and partnership and dreams reaches you.
ZERO: Our band has just started but I hope people don’t hesitate to come and see our live. There’s often people who feel they start to like a band too late so please use this opportunity and check us out. We hope those who heard of us the first time and those who already know us come and find out what we are like on the stage and enjoy their time at our live.

THE MIKRO HEAD 4N'S - Shibuya O-EAST saw a mix of visual kei eras in the performances of DaizyStripper, PENICILLIN, THE MICRO HEAD 4N'S and LM.C.

On December 1, Shibuya O-EAST saw four bands and a roller-coaster ride of visual kei history. The concept was simple: to gather different generations of visual kei in a diverse and bombastic show with music and visuals for all ages and styles. The sound track between performances couldn’t be more suitable as hide’s most famous tracks eased the wait.

The “papa” of visual kei (as he put it himself) Mr. Hoshiko, welcomed the crowd and introduced the line-up for the show. “Now, we probably have many wizened fans here today, so the young ones please be gentle and help the ‘baba-bangyas,’” he asked as the crowd laughed. (note: baba = old woman; bangya = visual kei fan-girl) “And we even have a special guest today,” he added, waving at the second floor as he introduced v-kei’s “mama”Shoji Noriko. The crowd gasped and waved as they turned around in admiration to see a face that has been connected to visual-kei since the scene’s early years. To everyone’s delight, the host also revealed that after each band, one of the members would come out for a brief talk!

The night kicked off with DaizyStripper, who despite not being new to visual-k, were the night’s babies – something not difficult when playing with bands like PENICILLIN, who started their activity in the early nineties. The curtain opened to reveal the band already on stage, and wasting no time, they dove right into Awairo no yume. Vocalist Yu-giri got rid of his hat for the head-banging and the crowd followed. Pumping fists and reversed-diving got the audience moving and ready for PSYCHEDELIC HEAVEN. Again hair flew back and forth as the crowd moved to the beat before all hell broke loose and the whole room started hopping right and then left as bodies twirled over themselves. Drummer Kazami was deserving of praise, displaying not only great skill but energy. Thanking the show’s hosts in a short emcee the band reassumed the lively set with Sunday Driver. WithKazami marking the tempo for the jumping bodies in front of him, the vocalist encouraged the crowd to clap and even graced them with some fan-service as he approached guitarist Mayu and unbuttoned his shirt to reveal a nipple. The enthusiastic cheers faded to give way to Rei’s well accomplished bass lines. Visually, it was quite a memorable piece with the whole venue pulsing and moving to the choreographies. The pumping fists continued for Setsubou no Freesia, both guitarists very energetic as they moved to the song. Not wanting to lose to the heavier bands performing, DaizyStripper ended the show with more moshing and wild head-banging. decade set the hall aflame with its interesting and wild choreographies. While Mayu kept it cool, even when taking the center for his solo, Nao distributed smiles and grins to the audience as he danced and thrashed his head to the beat. The band left the stage under cheers after the pleasing set of songs that got the crowd in a great mood for the rest of the show. But before moving on to the next band, as promised, Yu-giri returned for a short chat with NACK5 BEAT SHUFFLE’s DJ Asai. With hide’s classic Pink Spider going on in the back ground,DaizyStripper’s vocalist announced a new single and lives for the upcoming year. “Come see us!” he encouraged before adding, “Many people think we are not heavy, but we are! Please come check our shows out!”

With Hi-Ho and Doubt going on in the background, the crowd moved in anticipation for the next band. A new band whose five members are far from new to visual-kei made their debut that night. With kazuya and SHUN.(both ex- FANATIC CRISIS) on guitars, former D’espairsRay's ZERO on bass and TSUKASA on drums, andDASEIN’s Ricky on vocals, THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S revealed themselves to an eager crowd. The light went down for a dramatic piano intro flashing brightly as the band came out to loud claps. Wasting no time, they dove into Hello My Clone with its cool beat and strong drums. The band displayed from the start confidence and good stage presence. The rhythm section was particularly strong for this song with boss drummer and bassist showing great skill. Glorius Blaze with its catchy rock tune got the crowd shouting, Ricky’s voice adding to it. The vocalist took the lead for the short emcee, explaining he had gotten a phone call five months back asking him to join the band. “I was busy at the time and told them I'd have to think about it,” he explained. “When I called them back saying I would do it, they told me we already had this gig scheduled!” The vocalist continued, confessing, “I was very shocked because we didn’t even have any songs written at that time!” White lights adequately lit the room for White Soul, the pop-rock beat with well-executed guitar bits causing the crowd to move. Despite the lack of diversity between songs and short amount of instrumental solos throughout the songs, the good execution and confidence on stage seemed to please the crowd, who responded very well to the performance. I Surrender with its twirling towels gave way to a short drum solo during which the vocalist announced the last song, Kono saki zutto. With the crowd mimicking the string trio as they clapped, the slower song took over the room before THE MICRO HEAD 4N’S made their exit. Showing clear potential, the band will surely grace the fans with more solos in shows to come, and by the audience reaction they will definitely make an impact in the visual scene with a taste of old school rock. This time not one but two members came out to chat with DJ Asai; SHUN. and ZERO spoke a bit about the band and introduced some band goods, the guitarist explaining that the goods were all “ZERO-san design.”

POSE and Tell me eased the wait for PENICILLIN, the oldest band playing that day and one of the most iconic v-kei bands still active. Trumpets and a marching band accompanied the band as they made their way to the stage. O-Jiro was the first one out, immediately taking his place behind the drums, the support bassist following suit. With red horns flashing daringly, the band leader CHISATO was greeted by loud cheers that grew as vocalist HAKUEI came in with his outrageously big leopard-print fur-coat. Old school rock took complete control of the house, leaving no doubts as why the band survived this long. Awesome guitar solos, daring vocals and strong drums drowned the venue. NEW FUTURE was followed by Rosetta, the vocalist dancing and striking dramatic poses – always with a diva-like attitude. The drum and bass work was very well accomplished,CHISATO blowing the crowd away with an awesome solo. After a brief emcee, a heated guitar solo opened the path for JUMP#1. As HAKUEI danced and made scary faces, the other members moved to the beat, the sea of people in front of them following the choreographies. The classic Romance set the crowd on fire with the venue singing the chorus in unison and following the furi. The band completely owned the stage, the guitar and bass mingling perfectly with the drums and vocals. HAKUEI's charisma and stage presence were only rivaled byCHISATO, who delivered an ardent solo between some fan-service with the vocalist. Inazuma, with its cool opening, closed the set. The band moved around the stage, interacting with the crowd who head-banged wildly before bidding their farewells and leaving a trail of smoke behind after the bombastic performance. A few minutes later, the band leader joined DJ Asai for a short chat in which he talked about the band schedule for the following months. “That’s a cool t-shirt you have,” DJ Asai noted, and the guitarist confessed, “It’s LM.C’s t-shirt, but they didn’t give it to me!” He added with a teasing grin, “I actually had to buy it!”

The curtains moved once more for the nights last act, revealing LM.C already on stage for ✰ROCK the LM.C ✰. Electrifying and contagious is the best way to describe the performance. Guitarist Aiji and vocalist mayashowed immense energy as they moved around the stage non-stop, always demanding more and more from the crowd and supported by their energetic support band. Despite some technical difficulties that prevented the vocalist from jumping, Space Wannabiez electrified the crowd who head-banged between shouts of “Oi!” After a short emcee, the duo moved on to OH MY JULIET., the name Juliet leaving the vocalist’s lips in a yell for a dramatic start. Massive head-banging and pumping of fists accompanied the song, the vocalist twirling endlessly while Aiji kept it cool as he thrashed his head to the beat. The crowd control was impressive and continued throughout METALLY, the guitar speeding off as the fans pumped fists and moved to the wild drumming. SUPER DUPER GALAXY brought with it more fierce guitars while the crowd danced and jumped with maya for LET ME’ CRAZY!! PUNKY HEART, like the title suggests, brought diversity to the show with its punkish sound. Giving the staff a hard time as he climbed up speakers and ran around the stage, maya was contagiously energetic, as were the support members. With the crowd singing and moving to the rhythm, the band closed the show.

Taking the stage once more, Mr. Hoshiko thanked the bands for taking part in the show and invited Shoji Noriko on stage. Over the applause, the long time v-kei supporter confessed, “I will come to lives and head-bang for as long as I can!” The crowd cheered, thanking her with a loud hand of applause. Calling all the bands on stage for a last farewell, the duo asked the audience to, for a whole minute, shout for their favorite member at the top of their lungs! With that earsplitting demonstration of affection, the show came to an end – and It was indeed the perfect way to end the night. We look forward to more surprises with future editions of stylish wave GENERATION!

Aoi and Ryohei on Tour with ex. Kagrra, Bassist NAOKI and AN CAFÉ Drummer Teruki

Aoi and Ryohei, both former members of Ayabie have found their ways together again and will be going on their first tour throughout Japan titled "2012 Spring Tour -Joukei narabini Nodo Yubisaki-".

For the same tour it has now been decided who will be participating as support members and the line-up is a surprising one. Former Kagrra, member NAOKI will be joining the duo as bassist and drum support will be coming from AN CAFÉ's Teruki.

It seems that a certain group of people has come together from a certain period of time.

The tour will be starting on March 10th in Osaka and will finish off on March 20th in Fukuoka, whereas most parts are already sold out.
